The US Ambassador to the United Nations has announced an additional 50 million dollars in aid to Moldova to help the country accommodate displaced Ukrainians. Linda Thomas-Greenfield made the announcement at a joint news conference with Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita on Sunday in the capital Chisinau. The US had already pledged 30 million dollars to the country. Moldova, a former Soviet republic with a population of 2.6 million, has accepted more than 390,000 Ukrainian evacuees. About 100,000 of them are still in the country. Shortages of shelters and the financial burden have become major issues. Earlier on Sunday, Thomas-Greenfield spoke with evacuees and aid officials. One university student fled the city of Odesa with her mother and her six-year-old autistic brother. She told the ambassador that her brother has difficulty adapting to life in a shelter. She called on the international community to support children with disabilities and to help young people continue their educations. At the news conference, the ambassador said, "The stories of the refugees I've met here and of your efforts to support them are so important." She added that she will bring them back to share with US President Joe Biden and the UN Security Council. The Moldovan prime minister expressed her gratitude for the US assistance, saying that her country is accepting displaced people with the support of the international community.
