US to sell defense equipment to Taiwan NHK

The US administration of President Joe Biden has decided to sell to Taiwan equipment related to the Patriot air defense system.

The administration said on Tuesday it has notified Congress of its decision.

The proposed deal is worth 95 million dollars and includes support for the operation of the Patriot system and related equipment.

Taiwan's defense ministry says a total of more than 250 Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone from January through March 22. The number was double that of the same period last year.

The US Defense Department said, "The proposed sale will help to sustain the recipient's missile density and ensure readiness for air operations." It also said, "The recipient will use this capability as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen homeland defense."

The US is becoming increasingly wary of China, which has refused to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Washington fears Beijing may try to realize reunification with Taiwan on the back of its military strength.

A spokesperson at Taiwan's presidential office expressed heart-felt gratitude for the move, adding that it shows bilateral relations are "rock solid."
