The latest round of US sanctions against Russia unveiled on Wednesday include those targeting two adult daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin. US officials say Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova have helped Putin hide his assets. A senior US government official says the Biden administration has reason to believe that Putin, many of his cronies and Russia's oligarchs hide their assets with family members. Putin's second daughter Katerina reportedly majored in Asian studies at St. Petersburg University and studied Japanese. She is also known as an "acrobatic rock 'n' roll" dancer, and took fifth place at a world championship event in 2013. Russian media say Katerina serves as deputy director for the Institute for Mathematical Research of Complex Systems at Moscow State University. She also heads a fund supporting scientific studies that has close ties with an organization called Innopraktika. Members of its board include wealthy business tycoons close to Putin. They include the president of Russia's largest oil company Rosneft, Igor Sechin; the CEO of government-affiliated energy giant Gazprom, Alexei Miller; and the CEO of state-owned defense company Rostec, Sergei Chemezov. Putin's elder daughter Maria leads government-funded programs for the development of genetic engineering. She also serves as chief researcher at the health ministry's research institute.
