G7 to ban Russian coal imports NHK

Leaders from the Group of Seven nations have condemned Russia over the mass killing of civilians near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and announced additional sanctions against the country, including an embargo on coal imports.

The leaders issued a statement on Thursday amid growing calls for Russia to be held accountable for the civilian killings.

The statement says the G7 leaders "condemn in the strongest terms the appalling atrocities by Russian armed forces in Bucha and other Ukrainian towns."

It says the leaders will "further raise the cost of this war" for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his "accomplices."

The statement says the leaders are "banning new investment in key sectors of the Russian economy, including the energy sector."

The leaders will also speed up plans to reduce reliance on Russian energy, which include efforts at "phasing out and banning Russian coal imports."

The statement adds the G7 will ramp up its "campaign against the elites and their family members who support President Putin in his war effort and squander the resources of the Russian people."

The United States and Britain unveiled additional sanctions against Russia on Wednesday and expressed their intention to work with other G7 countries.

The G7 foreign affairs chiefs also released a statement after a meeting on Thursday, condemning the civilian killings as "massacres."

The statement says the G7 is ready to provide Ukraine with further assistance, both in military and financial terms, to allow the country to defend itself against Russian aggression and rebuild.
