Some Japanese companies are feeling pressure from tough new sanctions imposed on Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine. They're scrambling to find alternatives to Russian coal imports before Japan phases them out. Taiheiyo Cement and Sumitomo Osaka Cement both take the majority of their coal from Russia but are now pivoting to new suppliers. Taiheiyo Cement has already increased purchases from Australia and the US. Cardboard maker Rengo says it will start sourcing coal from Indonesia and other places. The firm plans to stop buying it from Russia by summer. Steel makers and power utilities are also looking for alternative suppliers.
