A senior US defense official has pointed out that Russia continues to strengthen its forces for an offensive in eastern Ukraine.
                
The official said on Wednesday that the Pentagon continues to see movements and activity of Russian forces in Belarus and Russia reassembling for &quot;a renewed push.&quot;
                
The official added that the troops have been equipped with helicopters and additional artillery systems.
                
The official also said the Russians continue to try to improve their mobility and firepower south of Izyum in Ukraine&#039;s Kharkiv region toward a deployment in eastern Ukraine.
                
The official said Russian units have been flowing into the north of Ukraine&#039;s Luhansk region after being reassembled and resupplied in Valuyki in western Russia.
                
The official said Russia&#039;s airstrikes continue to remain focused on the port city of Mariupol and other areas in eastern Ukraine, but Ukrainians are still resisting and defending the city, saying, &quot;We still hold Mariupol as contested.&quot;
