A tropical storm has hit the Philippines, leaving at least 76 people dead due to flooding and landslides. Tropical storm Megi stalled east of Leyte Island for two days through Tuesday, leading to torrential downpours across a wide area. A massive landslide hit a community in the city of Baybay on the island. Rescue workers are searching for survivors. Footage from the site shows the workers using machinery to remove sludge and debris from fields and homes. About 22,000 people have reportedly taken shelter in public facilities and elsewhere on the island out of concern that more mudslides may occur. The ground has been loosened due to the continued rainfall. The country's disaster management authorities reported that at least 76 people have died, and 29 more are missing. They are trying to determine the extent of the total damage. In December, a powerful typhoon tore through the central islands of the Philippines, killing more than 400 people.
