Videos have emerged online that purportedly show residents of Shanghai staging protests over a plan by the authorities to use their apartments as isolation sites for coronavirus patients. The Chinese city logged 27,719 new cases of infection on Wednesday, marking a record high for the second straight day. City officials are rushing to set up quarantine facilities in a bid to contain the rapid spread of the virus, along with lockdowns on wide areas of the city. Videos that reportedly capture scenes in the Pudong district in eastern Shanghai went viral on social media on Thursday. They show individuals in protective suits marked with the word "POLICE" skirmishing with screaming people. A local resident told NHK that officials urged occupants of some apartment complexes in the district to vacate their units so that they can be used as quarantine sites. President Xi Jinping's leadership has repeatedly emphasized its "zero-COVID" policy. But residents in Shanghai appear to be increasingly frustrated with anti-virus measures.
