The White House says the leaders of the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will meet next month in Washington. A statement issued on Saturday says President Joe Biden will host a special summit on May 12 and 13. It says a top priority of the Biden administration is to serve as a "strong, reliable partner in Southeast Asia." The summit is seen as a US attempt to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to the Indo-Pacific region, with China in mind. The US regards China as a top diplomatic priority even with the latest developments in Ukraine. ASEAN members are at odds over regional issues, including Myanmar and tensions in the South China Sea, while China accelerates its diplomatic offensive. ASEAN members are also concerned that the deepening tension between the US and China could divide the organization. They are expected to call on the US to find ways to engage in the region in a way that does not undermine its stability.
