The South Korean and US militaries began their joint springtime exercises on Monday morning. North Korea has repeatedly demanded that the drills be canceled.
                
South Korean military officials say the forces will simulate a response to a possible contingency on the Korean Peninsula. The exercises will continue through April 28.
                
Computer-simulated defensive drills will be carried out instead of live-fire training. This is due to the coronavirus pandemic and other factors.
                
The South Korean military has stressed that its aim is to bolster its defensive capabilities by enhancing the two forces&#039; operational readiness.
                
North Korea reacted sharply on Monday, saying a senseless confrontation against a nuclear power will only hasten the countdown to annihilation. Pyongyang had condemned the exercises in a statement the previous day.
                
Countries in the region remain on high alert for the North&#039;s possible provocations, such as launching more ballistic missiles or conducting a seventh nuclear test. Some observers say Pyongyang may stage a military parade during the exercises, as the Korean People&#039;s Army will mark the 90th anniversary of its founding on April 25.
                
The US Special Representative for North Korea, Sung Kim, is in Seoul to hold talks with South Korea&#039;s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, Noh Kyu-duk. They are likely to confirm their countries&#039; close cooperation in response to North Korea.
