Japanese professional baseball pitcher Sasaki Roki has grabbed the attention of the US media by coming close to hurling two perfect games in a row. Sasaki pitched eight perfect innings on Sunday before being pulled from the game. The feat comes just a week after the 20-year-old threw the first perfect game in 28 years in Japanese professional baseball. The US sports channel ESPN reported that "Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki" had extended his perfect-inning streak to 17. The monthly "Sports Illustrated" also reported online that Sasaki has retired 52 straight batters and thrown 17 straight perfect innings. It said no Major League pitcher has ever thrown two consecutive perfect games. It said the only pitcher to throw two consecutive no-hitters in MLB history is Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds in 1938. The report also said Yusmeiro Petit of the Oakland Athletics retired 46 straight batters as both a starter and reliever in 2014, when he played for the San Francisco Giants.
