The US Treasury Department says Secretary Janet Yellen will attend a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, despite expectations that Russia will participate online.
The department on Monday announced her participation in the April 20 meeting in Washington, which will be the first G20 ministerial gathering since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
This marked a reversal of her previous stance. Yellen said earlier this month, "I've made clear to my colleagues in Indonesia that we will not be participating in a number of meetings if the Russians are there." Indonesia holds the G20 presidency this year.
Since Indonesia said that Russia is expected to participate in meetings online, all eyes have been on how the United States would respond.
Speaking to reporters, a high-ranking Treasury Department official stressed the importance of Yellen attending meetings, along with partners and allies, in a bid to support Ukraine.
The department said Yellen will also meet bilaterally with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Japan's Finance Minister Suzuki Shunichi.
