Japan's defense minister says the country plans to provide Ukraine with Self-Defense Force drones and gear for protection against chemical weapons.
Kishi Nobuo unveiled the plan to reporters on Tuesday.
He said arrangements are underway to use commercial flights to deliver the drones and protective masks and suits to Ukraine's neighbors following a request from the country.
Kishi said it's very important from the viewpoint of national security to act firmly along with the international community in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
He said the defense ministry and the Self-Defense Forces will continue to offer all possible support to Ukraine.
Japan's government last month revised the country's guidelines on transferring defense equipment before providing Ukraine with bulletproof vests owned by the SDF.
The guidelines stipulate that Japan can provide non-lethal supplies to Ukraine amid Russia's invasion, which violates international law.
Officials say the protective gear is included in such supplies and that the drones are not defense equipment as they are commercially available.
