NHK has learned that several Japanese ministries will work together to address issues related to solar panels, including the damage they can cause due to natural disasters. Solar-power generation has expanded rapidly nationwide as part of efforts to cut greenhouse gases. Solar panels that were set up on steep mountain slopes have damaged nearby roads and buildings during recent landslides. Another problem is what to do with aging panels. Four ministries overseeing industry, environment, land and infrastructure, as well as forestry are teaming up. They have been tackling the issues separately, but this is reportedly not producing sufficient results. The ministries will limit areas where solar panels can be installed. They will also work with municipalities to ensure the proper disposal of old panels.
