China's Foreign Ministry says the country has signed an agreement on security cooperation with the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the two countries will cooperate on matters including maintaining social order, humanitarian assistance and combating natural disasters. Wang stressed the transparency and openness of the pact, saying it was not directed at any third party. He did not reveal the details of the pact. In March, Australian media reported on a leaked draft agreement that would allow the Solomon Islands to request that China dispatch military personnel and police to the island nation. The terms of the draft would also allow Chinese vessels to visit and refuel at ports in the Solomon Islands. The leaders of Australia and New Zealand have voiced concern over the potential for a Chinese military presence in the region. The US administration said on Monday that it will send high-raking government officials to three Pacific Island nations, including the Solomon Islands, this week.
