Repair work has been completed on the highly decorated Yomei-mon gate at the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage site north of Tokyo. The structure, which is a national treasure, has been under repair since December of last year after signs of roof leakage and spots of mold were found. A temporary roof and scaffolding have been removed, revealing its hundreds of intricate carvings. Parts that have been repainted and are within reach will be protected with acrylic panels. The shrine honors Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that ruled over Japan for more than 200 years until late in the 19th century.
