US online video-sharing platform YouTube has taken down the campaign channel of the sole candidate for the upcoming Hong Kong leadership election, John Lee Ka-chiu. The Hong Kong government's former No. 2 official and ex-police officer is certain to win a vote of confidence in the territory's chief executive race set for May 8. Lee's campaign director on Wednesday announced that he received notice from YouTube's parent company, Google, that it had terminated Lee's campaign channel. After Lee announced his candidacy on April 6, he uploaded videos of his press conferences and other events on YouTube, but the videos are no longer accessible. His campaign office disclosed it was told by Google that Lee's channel was shut as it ran counter to its terms of service. Lee is one of the individuals who were sanctioned by the United States in August 2020 for undermining Hong Kong's autonomy. Others include current Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam and senior officials of the Chinese government. The latest measure appears to be in line with the US sanctions. Lee called the sanctions unreasonable and designed to pressure him to be hesitant.
