G20 Finance ministers walk out of meeting NHK

The invasion of Ukraine has driven up prices for energy and food and compounded the turmoil in the global economy. But finance ministers from the Group of 20 nations refused to sit together on Wednesday to address the problems.

Some delegates attended meetings in Washington in person. Others attended online. Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko was invited to join them.

Indonesia currently holds the G20 presidency. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said she and her counterparts met under "challenging circumstances."

Russian officials started to speak. Then, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and others walked out or turned off their cameras in a protest against the invasion.

Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland tweeted that the "world's democracies will not stand idly by in the face of continued Russian aggression and war crimes.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov had joined online and went ahead with his remarks. He blamed the sanctions on his country for adding to inflationary pressures. He urged others to avoid "politicizing the dialogue."
