In Major League Baseball, Japanese two-way star Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Angels has earned his first win of the season.
Ohtani faced the Houston Astros as the starting pitcher in Texas on Wednesday. He carried a perfect game through five and 1/3 innings.
Ohtani displayed sharp sliders, in addition to his trademark splitter and fastballs that reached speeds of nearly 160 kilometers per hour. He also showed splendid control.
During his six innings on the mound, he struck out 12 batters, only giving up one hit and walking one.
He continued to bat as the designated hitter after leaving the mound.
He got two hits, earned two RBIs and drew a walk, while batting as the leadoff hitter.
The Angels won the game, 6 to zero. Ohtani now has one win and two losses.
Ohtani told reporters he pitched while trying to retire the batters one by one as the Astros boast a strong lineup.
Asked if he was aware of throwing a perfect game halfway, Ohtani said he was, but thought it might be a bit tough to pitch until the end.
He said his team had a major lead at the beginning, so he was able to throw aggressively.
