New Zealand's Prime Minister says her country has an important role to play in Japan's push to go carbon-free. Jacinda Ardern says both countries can benefit by working together on geothermal power. Ardern was speaking in Tokyo on Thursday at the launch of a coalition of two New Zealand organizations that will set up an office in Japanese capital. She said, "New Zealand has doubled its geothermal power generation in the past 10 years and has complementary capabilities to support geothermal exploration in Japan." The government-affiliated research institute GNS Science and chemical firm Geo40 will seek geothermal business opportunities with firms across Japan. Japan has many active volcanoes, and is said to have the world's third largest supply of geothermal resources after the United States and Indonesia. The Japanese government wants to triple the country's geothermal power output by 2030.
