US research group: N.Korea preparing for military parade NHK

The US research group 38 North says its analysis of satellite images raises the possibility that North Korea is preparing to stage a military parade next Monday.

The group says images taken on Sunday show thousands of troops and many vehicles moving in formation at Mirim Airport outside Pyongyang.

The site has often been used for military parade rehearsals.

The group also says images taken on Monday show 22 military jets, including Mig-29 fighters and Sukhoi-25 attack planes, and 11 helicopters lined up close to a main runway at Pyongyang's Sunan International Airport.

The aircraft are not normally stationed at the airport and are likely there in preparation for a parade flyover.

The group says another image, also taken on Monday, shows a temporary structure at Kim Il Sung Square in central Pyongyang.

The group points out that the structure seems similar to one set up for an orchestra in the same place ahead of a parade in January 2021.

38 North said its analysis of the images point to the possibility that North Korea is preparing to stage a military parade on April 25, the 90th anniversary of the country's military foundation.
