The United Nations' refugee agency said that more than 5.08 million people had evacuated from Ukraine as of Wednesday, following Russia's invasion of their homeland on February 24. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said most of them, over 2.84 million, escaped to Poland, while about 763,000 made their way to Romania. The UNHCR office said roughly 476,000 fled to Hungary, with around 428,000 crossing into Moldova. It added that some 563,000 went to Russia. The International Organization for Migration, or IOM, published a report on Thursday. It estimated that as of Sunday, more than 7.7 million individuals in Ukraine had been internally displaced by the invasion. That figure accounts for 17.5 percent of Ukraine's population. It rose more than 560,000 from the April 1 total in the previous IOM report. The latest report said 37 percent of the internally displaced people, totaling some 2.85 million, were taking shelter in western regions, where the city of Lviv is located. The report said that when internally displaced people were asked to identify their single most pressing need, the largest number cited cash or financial support, followed by medicines. The IOM also estimated that as of Sunday, more than 2.77 million internally displaced people had returned to their homes.
