Seven years since powerful earthquake hit northern Osaka NHK

A: Hey, got any news?
B: Not really, what's up?
A: Seven years ago today, there was a big earthquake in Osaka! Remember?
B: Oh right, that one. Six people died and many were injured.
A: Yeah, it was pretty bad. The quake was super powerful, especially in urban areas like Kita Ward and Takatsuki City.
B: I remember hearing about a girl who was crushed by a wall near an elementary school pool there.
A: That's right! They held a memorial ceremony in Takatsuki City for her. The mayor laid flowers at the school gate and everyone observed a moment of silence at the exact time it happened, 7:58 am.
B: That must have been tough for them. Do you know if they're doing anything to prepare for future earthquakes?
A: Actually, yes! The mayor said that since there's a high chance of another big quake in the next 30 years, they want to make the city more resilient. They even raised the estimate to around 80%. So, they're really working on it!
B: Wow, that sounds serious. I hope they manage to keep everyone safe. Let's keep our fingers crossed for them!

Wednesday marks seven years since a powerful earthquake hit northern Osaka Prefecture in western Japan, leaving six people dead and many injured.

The 2018 quake registered a maximum intensity of lower 6 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in urban areas of the prefecture, including Osaka City's Kita Ward and Takatsuki City.

A memorial ceremony was held in Takatsuki City, where a fourth-grade girl was crushed to death by a concrete block wall. The wall stood by an elementary school pool and 40 meters of it were knocked over in the quake.

Takatsuki City Mayor Hamada Takeshi attended the ceremony and laid flowers at an altar by the school's main gate.

The participants observed a moment of silence at 7:58 a.m., the time the earthquake hit.

Later, around 130 city officials also offered prayers at city hall.

The mayor noted the elevated risk of a major earthquake occurring in the next 30 years. In January, a government committee raised the estimate for the chance of a huge earthquake of magnitude 8 to 9 occurring along the Nankai Trough off the Pacific coast of central to southwestern Japan to about 80 percent.

Hamada called on city officials to speed up efforts to build a resilient city.
