Germany: Upcoming Scholz-Kishida talks a show of solidarity NHK

A government spokesperson in Germany has described Chancellor Olaf Scholz's upcoming visit to Japan as an important show of solidarity between the two countries.

Germany's First Deputy Spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann was speaking on Friday. She confirmed that Scholz will be in Japan for two days starting Thursday.

He plans to meet with Kishida on the first day. The two leaders are expected to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine, ahead of a Group of Seven summit in June. Germany holds this year's rotating chair.

The chancellor is also scheduled to deliver a speech at a business-related event in Tokyo.

It will be Scholz's first visit to Asia since taking office in December.

Germany has recently placed importance on advancing security cooperation with Japan, amid a growing sense of caution about China.
