The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 5,387 new cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday. The tally in the capital is down by about 1,400 from a week ago. The number of new daily cases has been lower than that of the previous week for 12 consecutive days. The seven-day average through Saturday stands at 5,507.7, down 22.7 percent from the previous seven-day period. Tokyo officials reported four deaths on Saturday. The number of seriously ill patients on a ventilator or an ECMO heart-lung machine in the capital is 14, unchanged from Friday. The nationwide tally of daily infections was 43,967. The number is down by about 3,600 from a week ago.
