A video that purportedly shows Shanghai residents struggling during the coronavirus lockdown has been deleted after going viral in China. The six-minute video, "The Voice of April," began spreading on a Chinese social media platform on Friday. It shows exchanges during a news conference the Shanghai authorities held in March, when they denied the possibility of a lockdown for the entire city. The video also includes residents' complaints about the lack of food and other daily necessities and problems accessing medical treatment. The issues are presented in chronological order. The video was removed every time it was reposted, and is no longer available. The Shanghai authorities are stepping up censorship as residents are becoming increasingly frustrated amid the prolonged lockdown. Shanghai reported a record 39 deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, as well as 21,058 new infections.
