Fierce battles continue in Ukraine as Sunday marks two months since Russia's invasion of the country began. Russian troops are intensifying their attacks on Ukraine's east and other regions. Police in the eastern region of Kharkiv said on Sunday that Russian bombardments had wounded three people, including a child. Governor Serhiy Haidai of the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine wrote on the regional administration's website on Sunday that Russian forces fired missiles on residential areas in the west, killing eight people and wounding two others. Ukraine's presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter that Russia is continuously attacking a steel plant in the eastern port city of Mariupol. He added that the place where civilians and military are located is being shelled with heavy air bombs and artillery. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier ordered his troops to halt the assault on the complex and seal off the area instead. The British defense ministry said in its regular bulletin on Sunday that Ukraine has repelled numerous Russian assaults this week along the line of contact in the Donbas region. It said that despite Russia making some territorial gains, Ukrainian resistance has been strong across all axes and inflicted a significant cost on Russian forces. Amid these developments, diplomatic efforts are under way to mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The Turkish presidential office said on Sunday that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a phone call that his country is ready to provide all possible assistance for the negotiation process. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to meet with Russia's President Putin in Moscow on Tuesday and with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv two days later.
