Taiwan has shortened the quarantine period from 10 days to three for people identified as close contacts of coronavirus patients amid the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. The aim is to ease the burden on public hygiene and healthcare workers and limit the impact on economic activities. Officials reported more than 5,000 locally acquired infections for the first time on Sunday and the tally topped 5,100 on Monday. On Monday, the definition of close contacts was narrowed. It now includes live-in family members as well as people who share the same work spaces. Close contacts are required to take daily rapid COVID-19 tests from the fourth to seventh day of quarantine. If the results are negative, they are allowed to work with certain conditions, including avoiding congested places. Premier Su Tseng-chang said Taiwan will not carry out a Shanghai-style lockdown, but instead make it possible for people to gradually resume normal life. People arriving in Taiwan will still be required to quarantine for 10 days.
