UN chief arrives in Kyiv for talks with Zelenskyy NHK

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Ukraine's capital Kyiv via Poland from Russia on Wednesday. He is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Thursday.

Guterres and Zelenskyy are expected to discuss how to ensure the evacuation of civilians from the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

Guterres met with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in Moscow. They agreed on the involvement of the United Nations in the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol.

They also agreed to hold follow-up discussions between the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, and Russia's defense ministry.

On Wednesday, a UN spokesperson said OCHA officials had held talks with Russian and Ukrainian authorities on the matter.
