The foreign ministers of Japan and Kazakhstan have discussed how to respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa visited the former Soviet republic and met his Kazakh counterpart Mukhtar Tileuberdi on Friday. Hayashi said the Russian invasion is a clear breach of international law, creating a serious situation that can undermine the foundations of international order. He stressed the need for the international community to work in coordination to respond to the situation. Tileuberdi said Kazakhstan will make diplomatic efforts and seek a peaceful solution based on the principles of the United Nations Charter. He briefed Hayashi on Kazakhstan's recent communications with Ukraine and Russia at the presidential and foreign ministerial levels. The two ministers affirmed cooperation over the Ukrainian crisis and other global issues. Before his meeting with Tileuberdi, Hayashi met with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. They exchanged views over the situation in East Asia. The two agreed to cooperate in responding to North Korea over its development of missile and nuclear weapons, as well as on the issue of abductions of Japanese citizens.
