The consumer price index for the 19 eurozone countries was up 7.5 percent for April, its highest rate on record. Much of the rise was due to a surge in energy prices on the back of Russia's invasion in Ukraine. Energy prices surged 38 percent. By country, consumer prices in Spain were up 8.3 percent, Germany 7.8 percent, and France 5.4 percent. The April reading is the highest since 1997, when data became available. The inflation is starting to take a toll on consumers and businesses. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde noted a high possibility the ECB will start to raise interest rates by the end of the year.
