A spokesperson for Poland's foreign ministry has suggested that the country is prepared to phase out its reliance on Russian gas. Lukasz Jasina made the comment in an interview with NHK in the Polish capital, Warsaw, on Thursday. One day earlier, Russia's largest state-backed gas company, Gazprom, suspended gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria. Jasina said Poland has been preparing for what he described as hostile actions by Russia for years. He added that a pipeline from Scandinavia is set for completion in October and that Poland has "full storage of gas" inside the country. He said his country can "survive such a Russian embargo." Jasina said Poland had already planned to stop gas imports from Russia from next year, indicating that its contract with Gazprom, which is due to expire at the end of 2022, will not be extended. Russia currently accounts for some 50 percent of Poland's gas imports. The spokesperson also mentioned the situation in Ukraine. He said, "Russia accepts only the language of arms," and stressed that Warsaw will provide anything possible to Ukraine, including military equipment.
