An aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said freezing the frontline is a possible scenario for realizing a ceasefire in fighting against Russia. Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the head of Ukraine's presidential office, spoke in an interview with NHK in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, on Thursday. He said Zelenskyy has emphasized that Ukraine must be realistic. He noted the country understands that it is impossible to liberate all Russian-held territories by military means at the present time under the circumstances. Podolyak also said Zelenskyy stresses that no Ukrainian territories will be recognized as Russian. He said such a step is prohibited by international law. Podolyak also talked about what sorts of security guarantees should be provided to Ukraine once a ceasefire materializes. He argued that in addition to other countries deploying forces to Ukraine, there should be a legally prescribed mechanism to immediately apply sanctions if Russia engages in aggression again.
