The shirt worn by Argentina soccer legend Diego Maradona when he scored the &quot;Hand of God&quot; goal in the 1986 World Cup has fetched 7.14 million pounds, or about 9 million dollars, in an online auction.
                
The auction house Sotheby&#039;s announced the result on Wednesday. It says the price is the highest ever for a sports-related item. The successful bidder remains undisclosed.
                
Maradona&#039;s controversial second-half goal was the opener in Argentina&#039;s match against England in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Mexico. It was judged to be a headed goal, but replays later showed Maradona had actually knocked the ball in with his left hand.
                
He is also remembered for his feat of dribbling past five England players to score a second goal in the game.
                
Argentina won the match and eventually clinched the World Cup title.
                
An England player swapped shirts with Maradona after the game, and later loaned the blue jersey to a football museum, where it went on display.
                
Maradona died at the age of 60 in 2020.
                
Before the auction, his relatives said the shirt that was going under the hammer may not be the one he wore when he scored the two goals.
                
But Sotheby&#039;s says it used photomatching technology to analyze video and photos of the game, and was able to determine that Maradona did wear the shirt for both of the historic goals.
