Rescue crews, civilians under fire in Mariupol evacuation NHK

Rescue crews in southeastern Ukraine are coming under fire by Russian forces as they work to evacuate civilians. Their efforts are centered on the besieged steel plant in the city of Mariupol. Hundreds of civilians are still believed to be trapped inside.

A video released by Ukrainian fighters in the Azov battalion shows shelling and heavy smoke at the complex. Russian forces had earlier announced a three-day ceasefire. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says they have gone back on their word.

Zelenskyy said the Russian shelling and assault against the steel plant do not stop. He added that there are civilians that still need to be taken out, women and children.
Rescuers on Friday managed to evacuate dozens of civilians out of the city. Ukrainian officials say the operation has been slowed by Russian attacks.

Fighters in the Azov battalion say a car rushing in to help the evacuation was targeted. They say one soldier was killed and six other people wounded.

Residents of Mariupol could see even more attacks over the weekend. Western officials say President Vladimir Putin may be pushing to seize complete control of the city ahead of a major Russian holiday. Victory Day on Monday commemorates the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany. Many analysts expect Putin to mark the day with a major announcement.

On Sunday, the leaders of the G7 nations will meet online to discuss the situation. They say Zelenskyy will take part in the talks.
