Voters in the Philippines are set to cast their ballots on Monday to choose a successor to incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte. Opinion surveys suggest the frontrunner is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the eldest son and namesake of the late dictator. Polling stations will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., with vote counting scheduled to begin immediately afterwards. Ten candidates are vying to replace Duterte, whose term in office is drawing to an end. Marcos pledges to maintain the Duterte administration's policies, such as infrastructure upgrades and crackdowns on illegal drugs. Marcos has been drumming up support mainly among young voters, who were born after his father's dictatorship. He claimed on social media that his father grew the Philippine economy through infrastructure development. Marcos also appeared to have succeeded in winning over Duterte supporters by campaigning with the outgoing president's eldest daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio. She is running in the vice presidential election that also takes place on Monday. Marcos' closest rival is incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo. Although she served under Duterte, she was one of his most vocal critics. During the campaign, she tried to court voters opposed to Duterte's heavy-handed style of governing.
