Voting underway in Philippines presidential election NHK

Voting is underway in the Philippines to choose a successor to outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte.

About 37,000 polling stations opened at 6 a.m. on Monday and will close at 7 p.m. Vote counting will begin immediately afterward.

Ten candidates are vying to replace Duterte. Surveys suggest the front-runner is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the eldest son and namesake of the late dictator.

Marcos pledges to maintain the Duterte administration's policies, such as infrastructure upgrades and a crackdown on illegal drugs.

He has been drumming up support mainly among young voters who were born after his father's dictatorship. He claimed on social media that his father grew the economy through infrastructure development.

Marcos also appears to have won over Duterte supporters by campaigning with the outgoing president's eldest daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio. She is running in the vice presidential election, which also takes place on Monday.

Marcos' closest rival is incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo. Although she served under Duterte, she was one of his most vocal critics.

During the campaign she courted voters opposed to Duterte's heavy-handed style of governing.
