Travelers on domestic flights during spring holidays doubled from last year NHK

About twice as many people traveled on domestic flights in Japan during the recent spring holiday period compared to last year's, when a coronavirus state of emergency was in place.

Eleven Japanese airlines said about 2.67 million people took domestic flights between April 29 and May 8, compared to about 1.34 million last year.

Passenger numbers were 1.9 times higher for All Nippon Airways, 2.3 times for Japan Airlines, and 2.4 times for Peach Aviation.

All Nippon Airways said the number of passengers recovered to 65 percent of the figure marked during the same period in 2019, before the coronavirus outbreak.

Only three Japanese airlines are currently operating international services.

About 141,000 people took international flights during the holidays, up 4.6 times from last year. The increase is due partly to a resumption of tours to Hawaii after a suspension of about 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
