The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says at least 11,520 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia began its invasion. The figure covers the period between February 2022 and the end of July this year. The deaths include 633 children under 18 years old. The UN office also says at least 23,640 people were injured during that period. However, the office believes the actual figure of civilian casualties is much higher as reports from some areas where intense battles continue are pending confirmation. By month, July 2024 marks the deadliest month for civilians since October 2022, with the death toll rising to 219. The report says at least 43 people were killed on July 8 this year after Russian forces carried out large-scale missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and other parts of the country. The UN office also notes that a series of attacks targeted medical institutions, in violation of international humanitarian law. The report says 68 medical facilities have been destroyed and 478 others damaged since the start of the invasion. It also confirms that 294 educational facilities were destroyed and another 1,012 were damaged.
