Thousands of people flocked to Seoul's Blue House on Tuesday, with the opening of the former South Korean presidential office and residence to the public on the first day of a new administration. The 250,000-square-meter compound, known in Korean as Cheong Wa Dae, was opened to the public after new President Yoon Suk-yeol decided to relocate his center of operations. Yoon moved the presidential office to a building once used by the defense ministry. He says it's meant to distance the administration from a "symbol of imperial power" and bring it closer to the public. The compound was flooded with people walking around the garden and taking pictures. The buildings used by former President Moon Jae-in until Monday remain closed for the time being. The Blue House was named for the color of the roof tiles on the building housing the presidential office. The compound is also home to what was the official residence of successive presidents as well as a state guest house. Some people have criticized Yoon for carrying out the move less than two months after he was elected. Others point out that the ensuing relocation of the defense ministry could lead to confusion or a lapse in national security.
