Russian forces are mounting airstrikes to take control of key areas in southern Ukraine. The fighting is concentrated on ports and islands in the Black Sea region. However, they are meeting heavy resistance.

The mayor of the port city of Odesa says a missile strike killed one person and wounded five others. Officials say seven missiles hit a shopping mall and a warehouse.

Ukrainian forces are fighting to take back territory they previously lost. Satellite imagery showed the aftermath of an attack on Snake Island. It showed the presence of a "Z" symbol, which is used by the Russian military.

Ukrainian officials say they targeted a helicopter and two air defense missile systems. However, the Russians say the attack was repulsed and that it "ended in disaster."

US officials, meanwhile, have updated their assessment of the invasion. They say Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for a drawn-out conflict.

US National Intelligence Director Avril Haines said the next month or two of fighting will be significant, as the Russians attempt to reinvigorate their efforts. She added, however, that even if they are successful, the US is not confident that the fight in the Donbas will effectively end the war.

Haines said both sides continue to believe they can win on the battlefield. She expressed doubts that negotiations will be able to move forward in the short term.
