The United Nations refugee agency says that as of Monday, about 5.91 million people had fled Ukraine to escape the Russian invasion that began on February 24. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says about 3.23 million of these people have crossed into Poland. It says about 880,000 fled to Romania, around 570,000 to Hungary, and roughly 450,000 to Moldova. It also says about 730,000 went to Russia. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, or OHCHR, says that as of Monday, at least 3,459 civilians were killed in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. This includes 238 children. It says 1,834 deaths were reported in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. It adds 1,625 deaths were confirmed in regions including Kyiv, Kharkiv in the east, Chernihiv in the north and Kherson in the south. The OHCHR says 3,713 civilians were injured during the period. But the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner, told a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday that the actual number of deaths could be thousands higher than the one reported by the OHCHR.
