Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin says her country will decide whether to apply for NATO membership within a week. She says Russia's actions in Ukraine have changed the security situation in Europe and the Finnish people should not be naive when it comes to Russia. Marin made the remarks in an interview with NHK in Tokyo on Wednesday. She arrived in Japan on Tuesday on her first visit to the country. Finland shares a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia. The Nordic nation has not joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization out of consideration for Russia. But Russia's invasion of Ukraine has triggered a sharp increase in public support for membership in the defense alliance. Marin said there is high support among the public as well as members of Parliament for NATO membership. She said the decision on the matter will be made within a week. The prime minister said Finland has always prepared for emergency situations. She said it invested 10 billion euros, or about 10.5 billion dollars, in fighter jets last December. Asked about possible military action by Russia on Finland during the ratification process for NATO membership, she said Finland has partners and many of them have promised to support it. She also said Finland is a member of the European Union so there is a mutual obligation to help each other. Marin said it is important to make the ratification process as short as possible and the matter is already being discussed with other countries.
