Al Jazeera reporter shot dead in West Bank NHK

A female journalist for Al Jazeera Media Network has been shot dead while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank.

Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head in the city of Jenin on Wednesday. She was taken to hospital and was confirmed dead.

The Qatar-based media network reports that she was wearing a flak jacket marked with the word "press" and also a helmet when she was shot.

Abu Akleh is a Jerusalem-based journalist and joined the network in 1997. She has covered the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Al Jazeera and the Palestinian Authority have blamed Israel for killing her.

Israel's military said they were investigating into the possibility that she was hit by Palestinian fire.

In Jenin, Israeli forces and a Palestinian armed group have repeatedly clashed since last month.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland posted a message on Twitter and strongly condemned the killing of the journalist.

He called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.
