The invasion of Ukraine has prompted Europeans to reconsider their dependence on fossil fuels from Russia. On Wednesday, European Union leaders laid out a plan to end that reliance. It would cost 220 billion dollars. Last year, the EU imported more than 40 percent of its natural gas from Russia and 27 percent of its oil. EU leaders want to deprive Russia of those sources of revenue. At the same time, the leaders want to make progress on their climate policies. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this would be like "speed-charging" for the European Green Deal. By 2030, the leaders hope to get 45 percent of their energy from renewable sources. For example, they would require people constructing new buildings to install solar panels. EU leaders said they would set up a platform to make joint purchases of hydrogen gas. Leaders of landlocked nations, including Hungary, wonder where they'll find alternatives for their sources of energy.
