China's top diplomat has reportedly criticized the United States over Taiwan, saying the US has reiterated its position of not supporting Taiwan's independence, but its recent actions and statements are quite different.

The US and Chinese governments announced that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had spoken by phone on Wednesday with Chinese Communist Party Politburo Member and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission Yang Jiechi.

China's foreign ministry says Yang told Sullivan, "The United States has taken a series of wrong words and deeds that interfere in China's internal affairs and harm China's interests, which China firmly opposes."

Yang added, "Any act that undermines the fundamental and long-term interests of countries in the region for its selfish interests is doomed to go nowhere," and "any attempt to form factions and engage in separatist confrontation is doomed to fail."

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for Taiwan to be invited to participate in the World Health Assembly as an observer. The WHO will open its annual meeting on Sunday.

Blinken said, "Taiwan and its distinct capabilities and approaches -- including its significant public health expertise, democratic governance, resilience to COVID-19, and robust economy -- offer considerable value to inform the WHA's deliberations."

He added, "There is no reasonable justification to exclude its participation."

Taiwan had been taking part in WHA meetings as an observer, but has not been invited since President Tsai Ing-wen came to power, due to opposition from China and others. China regards Tsai's Democratic Progressive Party as strongly pro-independence.
