Taiwan has complained that it has not been invited to an in-person meeting of the World Health Organization. Taiwan's foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou said on Thursday that Taiwan has not yet received an invitation to the annual World Health Assembly that is scheduled to begin on Sunday. From 2009 to 2016, Taiwan was invited to attend the WHA meetings as an observer. But it has not been invited since 2017, due to opposition from China, following the election of Tsai Ing-wen as Taiwan's president. Ou criticized the WHO for not abiding by its own principles of neutrality and professionalism, and for not responding to the strong support for Taiwan's participation from the international community. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for Taiwan to be invited to attend the WHA as an observer.
