Japan's Yamashita Yoshimi has been selected as one of the female referees for the men's World Cup soccer finals in Qatar. Soccer's world governing body, FIFA, announced on Thursday the list of 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video match officials for the event, which opens in November. Of the 36 referees, three are women, including Yamashita. FIFA says they will be the first female referees to officiate games at a men's World Cup. FIFA said, "They deserve to be at the FIFA World Cup because they constantly perform at a really high level, and that's the important factor for us." Yamashita was registered as an international referee in 2015. She was a referee in the Women's World Cup in 2019 and the Tokyo Olympics last year. She became the first female referee in Japan's J-League in May last year, and in the Asian Champions League last month.
