Canadian officials are joining some of their closest allies in banning equipment made by two major Chinese tech firms. The decision targets equipment from Huawei Technologies and ZTE. Francois-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, said telecommunications companies in Canada will not be permitted to include in their networks, products or services that put national security at risk. He added that the goal is to "protect the safety and security of Canadians." Wireless carriers are required to get rid of any 5G equipment from the two companies by mid-2024. They will need to remove 4G gear by the end of 2027. Officials in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand have already put their own restrictions in place. Chinese officials blasted the decision as a violation of the "principle of market economy." Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said China is firmly opposed to the move and will conduct a comprehensive and serious evaluation. Wang said officials will take all necessary steps to protect the rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
