The World Health Organization says 92 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in 12 countries. The WHO said on Saturday that the 12 countries include Portugal, Spain and Britain. It said 28 suspected cases have been also reported, and are under investigation. Monkeypox is a viral disease normally limited to Africa. But since the start of this month, a series of cases have been reported in Europe and North America. The WHO said the reported cases have no established travel links to an endemic area, and no associated deaths have been reported. The organization says the number of confirmed cases may rise, as the investigations proceed. Symptoms of monkeypox often clear up in about two to four weeks. But experts say infants, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems may become seriously ill. The WHO is urging countries around the world to stay alert.
